The Band

Band photo

The Bruny Island New Orleans Jazz Band was formed in 1996 from a group of musicians meeting on Bruny for a weekly jam session.

The band has performed at major festivals and conventions around Tasmania and mainland Australia, as well as many wineries, cafes, galleries and private functions. In 2006, a trio from the band played for 3 months with the Mississippi Rascals in Japan and a duo performed in the UK and Spain in 2008.

Fourteen years on, the band is still passionately committed to being one of the ‘Keepers of the Flame’ of the revival New Orleans jazz style.

The Music

New Orleans Jazz evolved in the early 1900s in the African American quarter of New Orleans. Featuring ensemble improvisation, syncopation of simple tunes and the intense four beats to the bar laid down by the New Orleans rhythm section, this music was raw, spontaneous and exciting.

This is the style played by the Bruny Island New Orleans Jazz Band.

The Musicians

Allan Gibson (trumpet / leader) started listening (and dancing!) to jazz at an early age in jazz clubs around London. He took up trumpet after migrating to Australia and his band played in Melbourne till his move to the halcyon shores of Bruny Island. His playing is laidback and emotional, with evocative use of muted trumpet.

Lili Raintree (banjo / bass drum / vocals) has a classical music background. When the band needed a banjo player she was coerced into learning to play and now contributes the driving rhythm essential to this music.

Paul Martin (clarinet / vocals) began playing clarinet when he arrived from England in 1955 and went on to perform with Australia’s leading New Orleans revival jazz bands. Paul is in great demand on the Hobart jazz scene.

Russell Dobie (string bass / vocals) is another talented and versatile musician from the UK, playing many styles of music and a very welcome and sartorially elegant addition to the line up.

Malcolm Martin (valve trombone), is a multi instrumentalist performer and teacher with an eclectic musical background – a very knowledgeable member of the band.
