The Band

The Bruny Island New Orleans Jazz Band was formed in 1996, from a group of musicians meeting on Bruny for a weekly jam session. Their enormous enthusiasm for revival New Orleans Jazz has led to them becoming one of the few, very respected revival jazz bands in Australia.

Allan Gibson (trumpet / leader) started listening (and dancing!) to jazz at an early age in jazz clubs around London. He took up trumpet after migrating to Australia and his band played in Melbourne till his move to the halcyon shores of Bruny Island. His playing is laidback and emotional, with evocative use of muted trumpet.
Mal Kent (banjo / bass drum / vocals) has a classical music background. When the band needed a banjo player she was coerced into learning to play and now contributes the driving rhythm essential to this music.
Rob O’Connell (string bass) made his debut in the jazz clubs of London, playing skiffle (remember that?) After circling the world a number of times, he and his trusty bass washed up on the Tasmanian coast, to become a very welcome and knowledgeable member of the band.
Paul Martin (clarinet / vocals) began playing clarinet when he emigrated from the UK in 1955 and went on to perform with Australia’s leading New Orleans revival jazz bands. Paul is in great demand on the Hobart jazz scene.
John Broadby John Broadby (saxophones) has played with varied bands for many years, from large concert bands to jazz trios. John is also a great pianist. His stomping alto and tenor sax playing are exceptional and really suit this band.
